While there is no long course world championships in 2010, there are six major meets taking place throughout the year. In five out of six, only certain swimmers can participate, and many of the world's best swimmers skip the other. I have already posted early predictions for two of those meets, and now I will predict three more, winners only. It is hard to predict World Short Course Championships in advance because many of the world's best often skip the event, although it might be shaping up to be the best attended version of the meet yet.

Commonwealth Games - October 4-13, Delhi, India - Predictions
World Short Course Championships - December 15-19, Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Predictions Coming When Start Lists Released (in other words, in a very long time)
These are all total guess, in terms of winners, and also who will swim what events! I could miss 75% of these, and I consider most to be obvious choices! I'll try again the week before each of these meets, and I will do better.
All of you out there: what do you think? Challenge my predictions, and we'll see whose smiling and whose embarrassed on game day!
Takeshi Matsuda over Phelps? MP still destroyed the field at Worlds after coming off a really long break, and he's getting back into training for this next season a lot earlier than he did last year. Has Matsuda shown some huge gains over the last few months at Asian meets?
ReplyDeleteGood call on Isotov in the 200m free. I think he's going to be the one to beat in that event very soon, not Biedermann or Phelps.
Since a swimmer only has to swim an event at either Nationals or Pan Pacs to qualify for Worlds (as long as they have one of the top two times in the US), I figure Phelps will pass on the 200 fly at Pan Pacs so he can swim the 200 free (which I have him skipping at Nationals). No way Matsuda beats Phelps; I don't think he can go sub-1:53 again, and I have Phelps breaking the world record at Nationals!
ReplyDeleteIt'll be close, but I see Izotov having a really good 3rd 50 to beat Biedermann at Euros.
Nice predictions. Not sure I share all of this Isotov love. I'm a Bieder-man. Check out my new blog if you're interested in which WRs I think will be next to go - http://speedendurance.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteWe shall see about Biedermann/Izotov duel soon enough :)
ReplyDeleteGreat blog, Tom! Interesting thoughts on the world records. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you have to say!
